Get a Job
Follow these steps to guide you in your job search.
Step 1: Learn about the company
-
Explore employer’s information by logging into Handshake, read their company profile and view posted job opportunities.
-
Review the company website to read the mission statement and recent news articles.
Step 2: Write your resume.
-
Review the company’s job description and highlight keywords. These words are industry specific words or phrases that are directly related to skills, knowledge, abilities and certifications. Make sure you incorporate the keywords into your resume.
-
Use Career Coach, O*Net, and the Career Guide to identify more keywords related to your field and job title.
-
You can find templates to get started on Handshake under the Career Center’s Resources. There is also Resume Builder software on Career Coach.
-
Need a resume review? Make an appointment through Handshake or come into drop-ins at Central Campus Mon - Fri: 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. in Central High Building, Room 206.
Step 3: Prepare your introduction
-
Think about what you want to say to employers when you meet them at events. Introduce yourself with a quick elevator pitch to highlight your skills, experiences and interest in the company.
-
Here’s an example: “Hello, I am ______, a student at Central Piedmont. I am interested in the ________ field and would like to talk to you more about opportunities at your company. I have skills in _____________, and my prior work experience includes _______________.”
-
If you saw a specific job during your research that interests you, be sure to mention it!
-
For more information, the Career Guide has an article about elevator pitches and Big Interview has a lesson about them.
Step 4: What to wear
-
Sign up to visit the Professional Clothing Closet. You can get up to 4 free business outfits each semester while you are at Central Piedmont, plus the first semester after graduation!
-
Show off your new clothes by getting a professional headshot in the Career Center. No appointment needed. The booth is located on Central Campus in Central High, Room 206.
-
Every industry is different and may not require business clothing! When in doubt talk to your professor about what to wear.
