Role of Faculty in the Accommodation Process

Faculty Responsibilities

  • To include a statement in all syllabi regarding the willingness to accommodate students with disabilities. College’s commitment to make reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • To be mindful that website and online course accessibility is mandated for public institutions under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. To ensure all course content and instructional materials meet the accessibility requirements mandated for public institutions under Section 508 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
  • (new bullet) In developing online courses or course material to be viewed online, it is important to plan for the information to be accessible from the start, as it takes more time and money to implement these changes later.
  • To meet with the student as quickly as possible after receiving an Accommodations form, if appropriate.
  • To sign the Accommodations Form, developed by the student and their disability counselor, and to put the accommodations in place as quickly as possible. If an instructor has questions about the accommodations requested, they should contact the Disability Counselor indicated on the form. To initial and date the Instructor’s Copy and the Student’s Copy, developed by the student and their disability counselor, to verify when the form was received and accommodations were discussed with the student.
  • To provide implement the reasonable accommodations and not question the validity of a documented disability when accommodations have been authorized by the College
  • To meet with the student as quickly as possible after receiving an Accommodations form, if appropriate.
  • To hold students with disabilities to the same academic and behavioral standards as all students, and to talk to the student and their disability counselor if issues occur.
  • To ensure that the requested accommodation does not substantially alter curricular academic standards associated with the course and that the student is meeting the College’s code of conduct.
  • To contact Disability Counseling Services if there are questions about the appropriateness of a requested accommodation.
  • To continue to provide the requested accommodation until a resolution has been determined.
  • To uphold the confidentiality of students' disability-related information, and to not request to examine the student’s confidential documents.
  • To assist the student in contacting the Disability Counseling Services office when a student requests an accommodation without an Accommodations Form.
  • To become familiar with the policies and procedures on the Disability Counseling Services website.

Central Piedmont Community College is committed to making reasonable accommodations to assist individuals with disabilities in reaching their academic potential. If you have a disability which may impact your performance, attendance, or grades in this course and require accommodations, you must first register with Disability Counseling Services. Disability Counseling Services is responsible for coordinating classroom accommodations and other services for students with disabilities. Please note that classroom accommodations cannot be provided prior to your instructor’s receipt of an Accommodations Form, signed by you and your Disability Counselor.
